So you think your online tap list is slick, eh?

Dear bar and brewery owners: While some of you struggle with the concept of an updated and useful website, let alone the mere existence of one (though, fortunately, those are few and far between), a new bar in Manhattan has gone where I'm not sure any other bar has gone before...and it's about time. Rattle 'n' Hum in midtown Manhattan has been making waves for several months now as they grow their reputation with a large number of high quality drafts, four cask engines, growlers to go, and regularly occurring special events. The naming of the bar is no coincidence; It's not unusual to hear U2 playing across the band-inspired speaker system at this Irish-American pub. Sure they've got a website, an updated blog, and a weekly newsletter. Now, Rattle 'n' Hum is making it even easier to know what's going on at their bar. How many people do you know with "smart phones," iPhones and the like? I'm getting close to a year with my iPhone and have found it to be one of the most useful and invaluable tech tools I've ever owned, especially when travelling around whether near home or the other side of the country. The bar has an iPhone app that gives you everything you need to know about what's going on...draft list...bottle list...cask-conditioned beers...events...and contact information with handy-dandy links to easily map and phone the bar. The only thing that seems to be missing is a 'last updated' tag on the lists. With mobile computing and internet access only getting more prevalent, before you go and try to get a website started up, you might want to see what it'll cost you to get a mobile phone app up and running first. For people on the go and for people simply wondering where to go, this is the perfect combination of the web and mobile devices.

This is my last posting of The Drafting Room's taplist, 1/23/09

Until the combination of Sean, Howard, Heather, Greg breaks down and doesn't keep the taplist up-to-date (yeah, that's a challenge :) this will be my last posting of local taplists.

Except for the Flying Pig in Malvern, local quality beer bars to the western Philly suburbs (Teresa's Next Door and The Drafting Room) have met TJs challenge. Well over a year ago now, Jeff Miller at TJs said enough was enough. Forget people calling and asking. Forget The Brew Lounge posting the taplist.

He's been updating the taplist on his website in as real of time as is humanly possible. Teresa's got their website up and going and are doing a decent job of getting it updated every few days or so. Now The Drafting Room joined the party a week or so ago and has been updating with every change of the tap handles. Whither the Pig?

Tap List at Flying Pig Saloon in Malvern, PA - 9/14/08

Yes, it really has been over 4 months since my last visit to the Pig. Just way too many other people and places to see.

News of the Pig's smoke-free environment has not been exaggerated. I can report that the only thing that has changed since my last visit there is the absence of smoke. Interesting to see almost as many people outside smoking as inside watching football.

What's On Tap tomorrow May 22nd? Funny You Should Ask

What's On Tap - May 22nd - northern Chester County, PA and nearby

Did you think I forgot about this little project called What's On Tap? Remember the last time I did it?

Recall that the idea is that I'm showing you what will be on tap. (Actually the proprietors are doing the telling, but let's not go and get all pedantic.) In this case, what will be on tap tomorrow, Thursday May 22nd.

Keep in mind that draft beer is not always a predictable thing. So, this is the proprietors' best estimation of what will be on tap tomorrow. In any case, it's a nice piece of P.R. for the great beer (local and otherwise) that we have flowing here in these suburban Philly parts.

This time around, I expanded a bit, now have 21 bars and brewpubs participating (last time it was 15, I believe). This time around we've got a new Ron's, an expanded Victory, and a few new entrants like Capone's and Half Moon. But, the biggest surprise to me is Rino's. Always known for excellent pizza and pasta, family-run Rino's is trying to make a splash in the better beer scene too.

While the tap list may not blow a lot of you away, there are a few good ones on there and plenty more of spectacular bottled ones in the cooler. According to daughter Samantha, father Lance is trying to bring in new and interesting (though, I think she might have used the word "crazy" :) stuff. Case in point, there's a poster board by the front door that encourages drinking Saison Dupont with dinner. While there are no plans to have a bar environment, keep Rino's in mind when taking the family out for a decent sit-down dinner or passing through the Exton Square Mall. Thanks to whomever it was that advised me to check them out.
