This is my last posting of The Drafting Room's taplist, 1/23/09

Until the combination of Sean, Howard, Heather, Greg breaks down and doesn't keep the taplist up-to-date (yeah, that's a challenge :) this will be my last posting of local taplists.

Except for the Flying Pig in Malvern, local quality beer bars to the western Philly suburbs (Teresa's Next Door and The Drafting Room) have met TJs challenge. Well over a year ago now, Jeff Miller at TJs said enough was enough. Forget people calling and asking. Forget The Brew Lounge posting the taplist.

He's been updating the taplist on his website in as real of time as is humanly possible. Teresa's got their website up and going and are doing a decent job of getting it updated every few days or so. Now The Drafting Room joined the party a week or so ago and has been updating with every change of the tap handles. Whither the Pig?

Yes, it really has been over 4 months since my last visit to the Pig. Just way too many other people and places to see.

News of the Pig's smoke-free environment has not been exaggerated. I can report that the only thing that has changed since my last visit there is the absence of smoke. Interesting to see almost as many people outside smoking as inside watching football.

Celebrate Summer with the Main Line's Best Draft Beer Selection

I'm not usually in the business of tagging the "best" and the "worst" that the craft beer world has to offer. Just passin' along the information, some insight, and perhaps an opinion here and there. It just so happens that in this case, I find a very compelling case that is difficult to argue. Any arguments will become even quieter, I predict, once the smoking ban goes permanently into effect. Main Line Today publication has bestowed the distinction of having the Best Draft Beer Selection (of the "Main Line") upon TJs in Paoli, PA. The award's accompanying text is pasted below. With TJs keeping normal business hours on July 4th and throughout the weekend, I think it's safe to say you can find me there at some point over the next several days sipping on a Sierra Nevada Summerfest Lager and a Cantillon Rose de Gambrinus, with some equally fine food from their beer-centric kitchen. Equally exciting is what's in the pipeline, including another award winner from Penn Brewing in Pittsburgh, the Weizenbock of World Beer Cup 2008 Silver Medal fame.

Along the Main Line, it’s hard to boast about a truly great beer selection unless you’ve got a brew menu that’s equal in weight and substance to a leather-bound copy of the King James Bible. TJ’s fits the bill, with more than 200 beers from far and wide, paired with a staggering 20 varieties on tap. Local and regional greats like Victory, Stoudt's, and Sly Fox are well represented, as are lesser-known selections like Boulder Brewing Co.’s Sweaty Betty Blonde.

A few IPAs good for the spirit

After my Inactive Period of Adjustment today, which included playing couch potato watching our Philadelphia Eagles, I've recovered to write a few notes and post a few pictures about last night.

Suzanne and her In Pursuit of Ale crew kept their word and made their way out on the R5 from Philly to Gullifty's to Teresa's Next Door to TJ's to the Flying Pig. Patty and I met up with her and her ladies (plus, a couple of almost-gents, too) at TJ's and moved on to Flying Pig with them. (Hey, it was on our way home from TJ's!)

Sounds like they all had a great day & night with Sly Fox cans for the ride (sh, don't tell Septa!), a scavenger hunt form to fill out, and great beer bars to nosh and slosh around at. I'm not sure which turned out to be their favorite stop; it probably doesn't matter, since quality beers were available at every stop they made. Even some IPAs for the IPA-ers.
