More Fox on the run: Sly Fox to grow with a new location
For those of you following along both here and in social media land, you may have caught me slipping some not-quite-confirmed news out there about Sly Fox's future [link to Facebook].
This isn't about that.
Instead, they chose to confirm another "rumor" that had been floating around - that of opening a brewpub in Berks County. Wyomissing to be specific. On the old Vanity Fair outlet complex property to be even more specific.
This strikes close to home for me, literally, as I was raised in Berks County and had my back-to-school fashion needs taken care of with shopping at the outlets - for Lee jeans and other stylish duds.
So in keeping with my proclamation last week that I'd begin sharing select press releases with you, I believe this one certainly falls under the umbrella of news you can use. Sly Fox beer is already distributed in five states, plus D.C., and this move serves to further shore up and invest in their home turf, which I think is a critical move for mid-tier/regional brewery, particularly those of a similar certain age.
And, did someone say "indoor Kan Jam"?!
Regarding that other rumor - another new Sly Fox location, in Malvern, Chester County? That will have to wait for another day.
RUMORS VERIFIED: Sly Fox Opening Brewery Outpost in Wyomissing
Pottstown, Pennsylvania – For more than 20 years, Sly Fox Brewing Company has remained focused on producing quality lagers and ales while building a reputation for their establishments—two festive pubs in southeastern Pennsylvania featuring a revolving list of award-winning beers and a lineup of can’t miss events.
A legendary goat race, a massive outdoor concert and Boot Camp– where the brewery gives away a trip to Ireland on St. Patrick’s Day–are just a few of the many creative events that contribute to making Sly Fox pubs unique in the universe of craft beer destinations.
Since opening their doors in 1995, the Sly Fox pubs have become local fixtures, community allies and favorite spots for beer appreciation. Celebrating, meeting friends and enjoying consistently creative cuisine is what we are about.
The family-owned operation is launching a third location just 20 miles west of the Pottstown brewing operation, in Wyomissing, Pennsylvania. “We look forward to immersing ourselves in the community and working with local charities and creating activities at the new location,” stated John Giannopoulos, Sly Fox Brewing Company president.
“Wyomissing is a booming neighborhood,” says Giannopoulos. “There are large employers, great residential sections, a museum, and improvement happening all over. There are tons of great street festivals, events, and the restaurant selection is top notch! We are very excited we are to be part of the future growth here.”
The newest Sly Fox outpost will be located at 801 Hill Avenue on the eastern edge of the Borough of Wyomissing in a renovated building that was formerly a part of the expansive VF Outlet. Most recently a Dooney & Bourke™ retail store, the building that Sly Fox Wyomissing will call home is part of a development poised to transform Wyomissing into the ideal live, work, and play location in Berks County.
Philadelphia-based Equus Capital Partners purchased the 24-acre center from Vanity Fair Corporation at the end of 2016 with the intention of redeveloping it as a mixed-use campus. Equus has committed more than $70M into Phase I of the Knitting Mills, and Phase II, a 20-acre site north of the main campus, has already attracted corporate tenants interested in new construction build-to-suit offices.
In addition to retaining the retail outlets and McDonald’s, the campus will be anchored by a new Wawa and corporate office users such as UGI Services’ regional headquarters and Tower Health’s corporate offices.
Incorporated in 1906, Berkshire Knitting Mill began as an experimental hosiery factory and, for a time, was the largest fashion knitting mill in the world.
“There’s a real sense of history here and throughout the Wyomissing area,” reflects Giannopoulos. “With the unique architecture and use of materials, these older buildings evoke a true sense of nostalgia. It’s great to see the community rallying behind it and repurposing the space.”
The 7,000+-square-foot building features two floors and will include a newly installed wrap-around deck. Materials, including 100-year-old bricks from the original Berkshire Knitting Mills, will be featured prominently into the Sly Fox decor and buildout.
“We’re envisioning a casual dining and bar atmosphere upstairs and a game room below like nothing else,” adds Giannopoulos. “The lower space is wide open with room for a stage and bar games. There’s even room for an indoor Kan Jam Tournament!”
Sly Fox Wyomissing will focus on developing a fresh and locally sourced menu to accompany their well-regarded beer portfolio. The convenient location, just off of Penn Avenue, is a prime spot for foodies and craft beer aficionados.
Sly Fox has had a strong presence in Berks County for many years. The brewery formed an alliance with the Reading Fightins two years ago and sponsored the team’s Power Alley Pub.
“We are thrilled to get Sly Fox as a lead tenant and believe they will attract other restaurants and stores as well as providing an important amenity for the employees located on campus and residents of Wyomissing and West Reading,” offers Kevin Flannery, acquisition associate and asset manager at Equus Capital Partners, Ltd.
Sly Fox Brewing Company’s Wyomissing announcement comes hot on the heels of other ambitious changes at the brewery that are being positively received in the beer community.
These changes include a brand refresh and three new offerings: Sly Fox Mudlust Coffee Porter, Vulpulin IPA and Alex’s Lemon Wheat, a brew that benefits the Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation.
“We’re really excited to create something special in Wyomissing,” says Giannopoulos. “A local pub that offers our award-winning beer lineup, but more—a community asset that people will love.”
About Sly Fox Brewing Company
Since their inaugural brew in 1995, Sly Fox has crafted more than 100 different top-notch craft beers. Their critically acclaimed year-round lineup and highly anticipated seasonals are available in their brewpubs in Phoenixville and Pottstown, as well as top bars and restaurants in PA, NJ, NY, MD, VA and Washington, DC. They were the first craft brewery in the mid-Atlantic to put in a canning line, adding it to their facility in 2006, and with it, earned the first-ever Great American Beer Festival (GABF) medal awarded to a canned craft beer, in 2007. They have earned GABF medals virtually every year since, including a gold medal for Grisette Summer Ale in 2017, and are widely recognized as among the region’s best and most enduring craft breweries.

Next Tuesday at Monk's Cafe: a new and special beer from Brasserie De La Senne

In my 13 years here at The Brew Lounge, I've never been much for simply copying/pasting press releases. On average, I get a handful each day from breweries and promoters both here at home in the Philly area and from around the country. I may use this one from the famed Monk's Cafe here in Philly to change that going forward. We'll see how this goes, but this could be the first of carefully selected press releases that I share with you in the future. There's a lot of news out there and I owe it to you to share more often.
This one's pretty special considering all the players and components to the story and the beer. The press release describes it all for you. All that's left is to try it.
I had a sneak taste of it a couple of weeks ago during Péché Mortel/Orval Day at Monk's and I'm looking forward to more of it. You should as well. Santé!
“Major Tom” Peters Partners with Brasserie de la Senne: Belgium’s famed brewery collaborated with Monk’s Café on Major Tom, a new beer that will debut in Philadelphia ahead of its release throughout the United States this spring
On Tuesday, April 10 at 5 p.m. Tom Peters – the “Godfather of Belgian Beer” and owner of America’s most iconic beer bar, Monk’s Café -- will debut his namesake beer: Major Tom, the first collaboration beer brewed between an independent bar and Belgium’s famed Brasserie de la Senne. Major Tom is a Double Saison that is bottle-conditioned with a strain of Brettanomyces (the wild, bacteria-eating yeast) that was cultivated by Brasserie de la Senne. Major Tom will be available exclusively at Monk’s Café from April through June, in 11.2 oz. bottles, before additional cases arrive at the venerable Shelton Brothers importers for broader distribution across Pennsylvania and the rest of the country.
Peters and his 22-year-old daughter, Isabel Thomas-Peters, traveled to Belgium in October 2017 to brew Major Tom with Brasserie de la Senne co-owner and master brewer Yvan de Baets during an all-day brewing marathon that included everything from formulating the recipe and choosing the malt bill to selecting hops and grinding grains. Brewed with Beechwood smoked malt – another first for Brasserie de la Senne – they made Major Tom a refreshing, flavorful beer with a super-dry finish, accented by hints of subtle smoke and delicately hopped with Aurora and Perle.
This special double saison spent two weeks fermenting in Brasserie de la Senne's signature wide, oval tanks, custom designed to minimize hydrostatic pressure stress on the hardworking yeast. Unlike typical tall, narrow fermenters that dramatically increase stress on the yeast, de Baets' shallow fermenting vessels preserve the beer's integrity throughout the brewing process. The finished beer has an ABV of 7.2%, which is not staggering by American standards, but makes it one of the strongest beers de Baets has ever brewed.
“Monk’s was one of the first bars in the United States to serve Brasserie de la Senne, and that was before Yvan had his own facility and had to take his recipes to brew elsewhere in Belgium – and to be the first bar in the United States to collaborate with him is quite an honor,” says Peters. “Yvan is one of the finest brewers in the world, and Major Tom is a passion project for both of us. This beer is doubly special to me because it is a collaboration with my daughter, Isabel, and brings my love for craft brewing into the second generation of my family while adding another strong young woman to the flourishing craft beer conversation.”
The bottle’s label carries extra significance – and a bit of tongue-in-cheek pride – for Peters: aside from the nod to the hero in David Bowie’s classic hit Space Oddity, he brought his trademark boldness in the face of politics to bear by suggesting the design depict him exiting a space ship and breaking free of President Donald Trump’s unwanted advances.
“That’s me stepping on Trump’s head,” says a smiling Peters. “We probably won’t be raising a glass of Major Tom together any time soon; after all, it’s an ‘immigrant’ beer!”

San Francisco Beer Week 2018 - Beers By The Bay, Part 2
Check back here for Part 1 of SFBW 2018 - Beers By The Bay
(click picture for a gallery of 139 pictures from SFBW 2018)
Saturday proved to be, no surprise, another great day for SFBW 2018. It was the day I allocated to Oakland and Berkeley and it began at Drake's Dealership in North Oakland with a meetup of my sister-in-law and two nieces. On one hand, I was really there for the food; I knew the beer would follow if for no other reason than Drake's 30 years of excellence in Bay Area brewing. The brunch event was meant to showcase a collaboration beer with Beachwood in Southern California, a routinely award-winning brewery that you should seek out where possible. But the staff seemed completely overwhelmed and it turned out to be a one-beer plus food kickoff to my day. Albeit, a 90 minute, 1 beer kickoff. The atmosphere, including live jazz for the event, is unbeatable with the large open-air space built within the skeleton of a former car dealership. No worries, there'd be plenty more beer to find elsewhere.
The next stop took me and my good beer wing people to Woods Beer Co. This made the second stop at a Woods location (remember them from my Thursday highlights?) for me during SFBW '18 and again did not disappoint. This day's special Woods release focused on the Divine Origins series and showcased two beers - a base beer fermented with a white grape, Fiano, in neutral oak barrels and the same base beer fermented with a red grape, Merlot, also in neutral oak. It's been a while since I've had such a well-done mashup of the beer and wine worlds. Again, Woods gained another brewing star in my book and I'm already looking forward to the next visit(s).
Then it was off to Rare Barrel which was hosting a Women In Beer event, complete with roughly 15 female brewers mostly from the Bay Area or elsewhere in California. Much as dabbling Rare Barrel beers should be done without hesitation, okay well I did that too with the excellent Ensorcelled, I wanted to make a point of checking out a few of the guest beers. The Salted Caramel Stout from Breakside Brewing (Portland, Ore.) and London Calling Bitter (Redwood City, Calif.) certainly did not disappoint. $2 from each beer went to the Pink Boots Society, adding to the significance of the event. Love the atmosphere at Rare Barrel and was happy to see a solid, but not overwhelming, crowd. It was here that my co-conspirators went their own way and I hitched my wagon now to the Tasty McDole caravan.
The last stop of the night was the Celebrator Magazine 30th anniversary party. These parties, hosted by the inimitable publisher Tom Dalldorf, always look like the proper, just-about-over-the-top celebration of beer that you'd expect. The last I'd been to was all the way back in 2008 - the magazine's 20th - when it was staged at the downtown Oakland Marriott. For the last at least 8 years, it's been held at Trumer Brewery in northwest Berkeley. Much more conducive to a good beer festival. Plus, Jack-On-A-Stick agreed. The east coast writer for Celebrator - Jack Curtin - was in attendance, in a manner speaking and his co-writers certainly appreciated his appearance, though maybe not the Trumer staff so much since minutes after the group picture was taken, JOASt was confiscated.
The good thing about being an east coast interloper at an event like this is that most beers are new to me. Not so much the breweries or at least their names - however, these days it's harder than ever to keep up even with name recognition now that the State of California now touts over 900 brewing establishments! Yet for all the new breweries, there are still the stalwarts such as Anchor, Bear Republic, Marin, Russian River, and many others bringing new beers (and even that "old one", Pliny The Younger). Was there one beer that jumped out at me? Difficult to say, but sitting here more than a a week later, I realize that I can't get the chocolate aroma forward and Munich malt-based Hellesexy out of my mind from New Bohemia in Santa Cruz. Or maybe it was just the perfect break that I needed from so many hop-centric beers.
Back from Berkeley by way of BART train to downtown. I was teetering at this point between heading to Sycamore (Firestone Walker), Hopwater Distribution (North Coast), or The Willows (San Diego breweries) for their respective events, but I knew by this point I'd pressed my luck as far as I felt necessary (boy, am I getting old, or what?!) and called it another successful day.
Sunday brought nearly a full day of SFBW frivolity before heading out the redeye back to the east coast. I'd originally considered San Leandro to search out a young-ish brewery - Cleophus Quealy - as well as stop by the original Drake's. But, the timing and the hassle of dragging luggage with me was not appealing. So, I started where I was always planning to begin and went from there with a downtown San Francisco day to close out my trip. The non-negotiable beginning was for brunch at 21st Amendment.
Similar to my thoughts on Magnolia being a must-stop each visit to San Francisco, the original 21st Amendment brewery on 2nd Street (near AT&T Park) has seen quite a bit of me over the years as well. I'm fond of saying that fruit usually does not have a place on the rim of my beer glass, but at 21A, I make an exception for the perfectly natural and acceptable garnishing of the Hell or High Watermelon Wheat with a wedge of watermelon. But I wasn't there for the watermelon beer on this last day of SFBW. It was the barbecue (chicken, in this case) and the special beers. And for the live music. And for the unplanned meetup with owner Shaun O'Sullivan, Dave McLean (Magnolia), and a handful of others. It was for 90 minutes that turned into three hours. It was for the last day of photo ops with my Philly Special t-shirt. And it was to continue reveling in Super Bowl glory with a couple of like-minded fans who were there in their Eagles jerseys.
If I was to make the most of staying in the city, it began with doubling my time at 21A and then filling out the rest of the day with whatever else tasted good. Next up, that meant walking the few short blocks to Black Hammer, a relative newcomer to the city scene. A unique space more or less underneath the elevated I-80 approach to the Bay Bridge was full of similarly minded people. They, like many breweries across the country, are attempting to capitalize on the NEIPA craze and the day's event was entitled "Lazy, Crazy Hazy IPA Sundaze". I generally try to steer away from them. What I did find from Black Hammer was a very good Sparkle Pony Belgian Blonde and a surprisingly pleasing Christmas in Febrewary Spiced Saison.
Having rejoined my friend Kevin at this point, we made our way over to Cellarmaker. Though, not technically an event, a stop at Cellarmaker is something I try to do as often as possible as well. Even given their immense popularity, I've still never been there when the crowd is crushing to the point of driving me out. So, it was another handful of beers to help close out my last stop. Some of the usual suspects were on the list (Coffee & Cigarettes and Taco Hands never disappoint), and I added a couple that I've never come across before and again did not leave disappointed. That would be Lost Wisdom Saison and Dobis Plus IPA (100% Citra).
My biggest disappointment came after Cellarmaker and that was when my Lyft driver dropped me at my favorite sushi spot for one last meal only to discover that their new hours have them closed on Sundays. A hearty WTF?! If I'd known this, I'd have pivoted to my other last-SF-meal-before-a-redeye-tradition at Mikkeller. But at this point, it would've been cutting it too close for enjoyment and still need to get luggage from hotel and get to airport to do the TSA tango.
The SFBW '18, while barely four days long in my experience this year, was worth every minute and bit of effort to see some of what's old, new, and still great about the Bay Area beer scene.
