2015 Year-end Clearout Special

These last couple of years have been, well, something else. So much so that as I was putting the wraps on my ten-year-commemorative postings the other day, I decided to clean up the many dozens of unpublished drafts of material that I'd begun throughout the years but never ultimately shared with you. Many involved pictures, many others were news events and/or op-ed style responses to the news.

Some don't matter anymore and have therefore been deleted in an effort to begin 2016 with zero previously unpublished material. The rest I'm including in random order below as a laundry list of things you may find interesting that were stewing around in my draft folder for way too long — some bits since 2008!

Now, with this piece of the deck cleared, I can begin 2016 clean and fresh and ready to get this ship writed [sic] in the Year of the Return of the Independent Beer Blog.

Pyramid Beers. They sent me some in 2009. I drank them. I liked them. The Haywire especially. I probably did some social posting about it and lo-and-behold, they later win a Gold medal for it at the Great American Beer Festival. Something similar happened last year with Four Seasons in western Pa. and their Dark Side Oatmeal Stout winning a GABF silver medal. I do what I can...

In the Aughts' middle years, I found myself in Texas (esp. Dallas metro area) quite a bit. I've long known of the Flying Saucer chain of nearly 20 beer bars across the south from other cities where I've stumbled in and out of. This was my first visit to the Addison, Tex. location. Some pictures if you please...

February of 2008 found me in northern California (as do many Februaries as my travel log will testify) and at the 20th anniversary party of Celebrator Magazine. As the handful of pictures below suggest, it was a splendid time. The rest of the photos can be found over at Picasa via this link. Below, you'll see The Trappist in Oakland, only recently opened at that time. In my unfinished posting, I described it as a new Belgian bar in an unlikely place (Oakland, which at the time was beginning to pull increasingly more habitants over from skyrocketing real estate of San Francisco) with a high ceiling, yet cozy feel and a small, but great list of beers. They're still doing it well eight years later.

Ah yes, Pittsburgh. Every year sees me there at least once for work, hockey, running, or beer. Well, let's be honest, beer is included in every trip. In 2008, you may recall a Flyers/Penguins playoff series. I negotiated a little wager of beer from brewers and bar owners between the two cities and, well, I needed to make the cross-state trip to pay up. The settlement was made at the rather new Bocktown Beer & Grill in Robinson Township, near the Pittsburgh airport. It still exists (along with its sister location in Monaca) as one of the beer destinations in the Pittsburgh region. The first four pictures below are from Bocktown and the last seven from the Creekside location of the Sharp Edge Beer Emporium.

Back to Dallas again. This time, a handful of pictures from the Dallas location - est. 1992 - of the Ginger Man mini-chain of beer bars. No longer associated with the NYC and Conn. ones, this one in the McKinney section of the Big D is one of six in Texas. One of my favorite bar settings/atmospheres. A comfortable two-story homey feel inside a likewise comfortable backyard. At the time, there was a bartender named Courtney Love; I made her show me her driver's license to prove it.

Then there's the pride of Victory and Chester County, Richard Ruch, Amish Rob, and Co., at the center of this Oktoberfest-themed video.

And while on the topic of videos, there's this short episode that I'd forgotten completely about that I stumbled upon live at Monk's Cafe in Philly back in 2010.

Keeping with the lighter theme of things, yes let's please do remember TO NOT BE A DOUCHE. I'm pretty much on board with 100% of all of these and even throughout my entire book researching, writing, promoting, and selling have always endeavored to keep them in mind. Yet, there does seem to be a disturbingly growing minority of them.

From 2010 at Brauhaus Schmitz on South Street in Philly, this German-themed beer dinner with owner Matthias Trum of Aecht Schlenkerla still ranks as one of my favorite and most informative beer dinners ever attended. Pictures here via this link and video below of a very engaged Trum.

Love was in the air at McKenzie Brew House?

Ray Deter passed away in 2011. He was central to the success of dba in NYC and New Orleans where the beer, wine, tequila, and whiskey were way ahead of the curve. I'd copied down Tom Peters' (Monk's Cafe) sentiments that he'd posted on the website while Deter was still in the hospital. Perfect words for a man that certainly left his mark on the world of great beverages...

"Ray is a beer pioneer…dba was one of the first real beer bars on the East Coast....I remember sitting on dba's back patio one early Fall evening a few years ago with Ray, Dennis and beer writer, Michael Jackson. We were discussing jazz, beer, wine, and of course, talking some smack about Philly vs New York as the better beer town. Ray has always been delusional in thinking that New York has it going on beer-wise. Michael and I felt that Philly was the ultimate beer town in the US....Ray is the consummate host. He makes everyone feel at home, from the casual beer drinker to the most obsessive beer geek....Ray was beer before beer was cool."

This was weird. But maybe nothing compared to the litigation looniness of today.

This, on the other hand, was fun and informative. Iron Hill only had nine locations and Bob Barrar was not yet at 2SP Brewing Company.

These were enlightening quotes from 16 Mile Brewing Company in Georgetown, Del. circa 2012. I should check back now, four years later, and see how they match up with what I learned and captured in my book...
"We are bold sessionable ales with a strong local feel....They are all English in heritage but with a America craft beer style. We are going to do two very interesting things that really set us apart. One is a whole series of beers for charity, one a year round brand the others will be limited edition....We have a stage for political speakers, live small bands, chefs, to even farmers a soap showcase to talk and people to learn. We are asking people to come in and unplug and talk with others and learn....We even have kitchen prep area so gourmet chef can come by and prepare killer foods for guests....The goal of this brewery is to really just me a local beer for people living within around a hundred miles of us, and that is it. We do not even want to go to Philly, DC, or even in Baltimore where we are we want to be small there so we can be big in the other markets."

In 2013, I was attempting to get caught up — sort of like I'm trying to do again here. Here are some links back to The "Intro", Part I, Part II, Part III, Part IV, Part V, Part VI, Part VII, and Part VIII.

I had at least four more installments focused on other parts of the country that I never got around to. You'll find them scattered around this posting — Dallas; Pittsburgh; NYC, Washington DC; etc.

Oh, right. Speaking of Washington, DC. This was in the time roughly of 2009-2010...

How about Virginia? Yes, Virginia. Back in 2012, I "discovered" Hardywood Park on edge of Richmond and VCU's campus. Not sure I ever shared with you and am not going back to check. Here are a few pictures that begin to show off this very special East Coast brewery with what should be a very promising future.

Let's also not leave out Providence, RI. Not sure I've praised Julians (est. 1994) in print, certainly to many of you in person, but these pictures come from 2010 and Julians continues to still represent as well as ever today. If I had pictures, I'd also share my love for Track 84, just across the street and down a short almost alley-like road from the airport. Alas, though, not only are my pictures nonexistent, this last summer also saw them close. Bummer and a loss for the local beer scene for sure.

I began to take on the craft vs. crafty debate across many paragraphs and pages, but then wasn't satisfied that it really mattered enough to me. This was the hub-bub of 2012 and showcased the pains of growing in an industry segment like this one. And if I couldn't get it to matter enough to me, I wasn't going to share it with you. But, here are a few words that I salvaged...

"They've made a list (and presumably checked it twice) and cited the naughty list of those that are not craft brewers....Fact is, or at least I believe that most will take this as fact, even some of our darling micro-est of microbreweries look anything like a "hand-crafted" brewery when you step into their operations....in the sense of what happens when Boston Beer, Dogfish Head, Victory, New Belgium, or any of the others beginning butting up against the BA-defined six million barrel threshold? (Which, by the way, used to be only 15,000 barrels. Recall those quaint, old days?)....As the aging "craft" brewing industry begins to look at succession plans, not to mention as more of the "macros" want to buy into the "craft" segment and their big money is too much for some to turn down, regardless of how true to the original recipes and mission statements the "craft" brewer remains....I've taken a lot of words here (hopefully) to point out that this is all beyond inside baseball for most and silly to many. Some predict that if the beer geeks grab a hold of this, the damage could be worse than predicted....What does craft really mean anyway? What does it mean to you?"

Well, that seems as good a place as any to end. My draft folder is cleaned out and I'm ready to begin 2016 anew and without the ghosts of draft posts past.

That was fun for me and a bit healthy going through that cleanse and purge! Have you enjoyed any of this or has this all left you rather (un)comfortably numb?!

Ten years of serving at The Brew Lounge - Thanks for the Beers and Cheers - Parts 7-15

Should I apologize in advance? I was told no one reads anymore. Or, at least no one has time to read. Or has attention span to read or .....Nah, no apologies. So on that note, grab a beer and here we go.

September 2015 brought the 10th anniversary of my writing here at The Brew Lounge. Back in the early weeks of 2015, I began a series of postings meant to commemorate and bring some sort of retrospective to the myriad ways in which I've covered the brewing industry from Philadelphia to San Francisco and beyond. From running to beer events to homebrewing and much much more.

My Part 1 posting, even re-reading it now, I believe to be a pretty darn good encapsulation of how I've reflected upon these last ten years.

Then this little 416-page book of mine hit the streets in June. I did Part 6 of this series in July and was due to finish it all by the anniversary in September. Ha, to think!

Since June and the book release, I've done 48 book signing events and will have 51 under my belt by year's end. Truly, if I never did before (which isn't at all true), I now appreciate all the more and without a doubt the difficult work that brewery and distributor reps undertake in order to bring great beer to us all at interesting and engaging events.

With that as background, I'm going for the lightning round here to close out the content that I had planned for Parts 7-15. I truly have enjoyed the last ten years of pulling together the people, places, and beers. It's been exhausting much of the time, but I wouldn't trade it for the experiences I've had, people I've met, places I've seen and the travels to find them, and beers I've drunk.

What will 2016 bring? A return to a more well-rounded, independent, unbiased flow of information here at The Brew Lounge. I contend without wavering that I've never ceased being independent and unbiased. But, in the past couple years, this site has become less well-rounded (as my waistline has become more so). The only thing that I've continued with absolute consistency is the weekly and monthly calendar of events. That will, no doubt, persist as they continue to be well-trafficked postings. But, you can be sure to see more establishment reviews, beer reviews, and interesting insights into the industry that I'd become known for over the years.

So, let's put a bow on the last ten years by grabbing a beer and going down memory lane to remember....

Construction Updates
To say there's been explosive growth in the last five to ten years would be an understatement. No possible way to keep up when even the Brewers Association can barely.

But I attempted to. With a full index that you can see here at this link, Beginning in 2005, I attempted to capture each significant brewery-related endeavor in the Philadelphia region, and then some.

The one closest to my house, McKenzie Brew House in Frazer/Malvern, was one of the first I covered and it generated quite a bit of interest and interestingly still today gathers a fair number of page views each week.

Honestly, this is some of the grunt work that I'm most proud of.

Beer Running
You probably, like many out there, laughed back in the days when I would write about the splendors of mixing my two passions — running and beer.

I believed in it so much that long before there were much more than a few weirdo brewery 5-Ks in this country, I began a series of Philly Beer Week-based "beer (fun) runs".

Cut to the chase, these became so popular that in working with Dock Street, we created a 5-K race around the home turf of the brewery. Closed streets. Police presence. Bib numbers. Official timing, real prizes, and an after party. A real bona fide race. During Philly Beer Week. The amount of scoffing would not deter me. And most giggles and sneering eventually turned to disbelief when we hit our maximum registration of 400. This was in 2012.

Further proof of how much running and beer mean to me? I can recall instantly my finish time in all nine marathons I've run, exactly which friends and family came to cheer me on during the race and join for a post-race meal and where they stood during the race, but also my first post-race beer. Don't believe me? New York City #1 (Brooklyn Pennant); Marine Corps in DC (Sierra Nevada Pale Ale); Philly #1 (Tied House/General Lafayette Escape); Pittsburgh #1 (Church Brew Works Pious Monk Dunkel); Philly #2 (Dogfish Head 60 Minute); Pittsburgh #2 (Duvel); Harrisburg (Tröegs Sunshine Pils); Pittsburgh #3 (waited 'til Monday); New York City #2 (Brooklyn Brown).

"Social" Media
It's more important than ever to be social. Or is it? Or how do you do that? The more time that goes by, I'm not sure if I really know. It doesn't help that in the exploding industry, the communication dynamic has become more complicated.

I took to Facebook in the '08-ish timeframe. And, even though I had a Twitter account, it took me a few more years to warm to it. Throughout, I'd post videos to YouTube, even including interviews. Never did anything real with Pinterest and only just finally got on the Instagram bandwagon in the past few months. It's all become a complex web of a mess and all important in some way shape or form, but certainly does consume a bunch of time that I still wonder how it all pays off.

So, yeah, I continue to chip away at a social media presence. It works to a certain degree unless, in Facebook's case, you experiment with paying for ad placement and later stop. Then they disown you and drive your penetration down. But I won't concern you with that.

Beer Reviews
I want to get back to doing some sort of beer reviews to share with you. I still believe that they are instructive exercises for both me and you. I just need to figure what the best template is for sharing.

My reviews will continue to live here, so please don't bother asking if I'll put them on any of the rating websites or that beer-check-in service. Not my cup of tea whatsoever.

Here's a full rundown of beers sampled and discussed at The Brew Lounge in the past. Some oldies and goodies on this list as you'll see.

Beer Events
As I'd mentioned, one thing has stood out loud and clear to me as a fan-favorite around here: the beer events calendar. It has always been at no-cost and with no judgement. Fact is, there has not been a beer events calendar like it in the ten years I've been doing it. There is no pay-to-list and anything I become aware of from simple free tastings to expensive dinners and mega festivals will get listed.

Not only has my aim been to arm you with information you need to know to plan your own personal calendar, it has also been to provide feedback from those events that I personally attend. Sure, my attendance is occasionally comp'ed, but when it is, that has never — repeat, never — tainted my always independent and always unbiased reaction in covering the event.

Pictures, as well as video, are always very important in this aspect of The Brew Lounge and you'll find them scattered throughout the event highlights both here and linked typically at Picasa and/or Facebook. The Brewer's Plate has been an annual event that has never escaped my radar as one of Philly's best. For a full rundown of all beer event highlights that I've covered, check this out.

A Note of Thanks
No matter how big little ol' craft beer gets, the underpinnings of the segment will always be rooted in a supportive environment of successful entrepreneurs happy to help out those that are deserving along the way.

This could not have been more evident to me than throughout the last couple years of research, writing, and promoting my book. Sure, the business of beer is more cut throat at every level than it ever has been. Being naive is no longer an option on the pathway to success. On the other hand, it would be easy to turn a jaded eye on the industry and say "it's only business". But, it's not that simple in this industry that has just a little something extra special that can still be seen if you look closely for long enough.

For me, it was finding the unwavering support (and sometimes surprising out-of-the-woodwork support) for my book efforts. I truly believe that for my professional representation of the industry over the past ten years, the people representing the establishments in my book that gave me whatever I needed throughout my research and writing and then, even more importantly, gave me what I needed to effectively promote the book (event time and space; media plugs; etc.) will be the ones that I long remember and can never thank enough. Those that didn't? Well, it won't steer me clear of them in covering them in the future, but on a personal level I now have a different perspective.

The brewers and bar owners are way too numerous to mention by name and I collectively thank you all. On the media side, the likes of Lew Bryson, Jack Curtin, Arthur Etchells, Mat Falco, Danya Henninger, Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, Tara Nurin, Origlio Beverage/Draught Lines, Philly Beer Week, Philly Tap Finder, Profile PR, Don Russell, and Carolyn Smagalski make a well-rounded list, yet small enough that I'm sure I inadvertently and unfortunately left someone out, of folks that have had my back and supported me through the years and during my book project. And, of course, there's an obligatory tip of the glass to the consummate beer writer, Michael Jackson, for whom I was honored to give a memorial toast in 2007 at The Drafting Room in Exton, Pa.

That's it in a nutshell. I almost feel like burying a dirty little tidbit in here to either prove or disprove that any of you are still interested in reading anything of significant length. Or maybe a piece of "embargoed information" of which I seem to get many but yet never get the right to "break the news". No bother, that's never been my game anyway.

You might be thankful that this was all concluded in one massive posting. Each of the sections above was originally intended to be their own distinct and much-longer postings spaced a few weeks apart. Hopefully, at a minimum, you skimmed through this and had some interesting bits and pieces of takeaway. It's a longer form of writing, but that's what I'm most comfortable with and what I'll more/less be returning to in 2016. I'll save a spot for you at the bar.

Weekly Beer Calendar Update: December 17 - January 1

Let's go ahead and close out the beer events calendar for the year. You've just 15 days remaining to find some new favorite beers, breweries, and bars of 2015. I've even dug up a few New Year's Day events that I'll include here just for good measure. Have at it and while you're at it, have a wonderful Christmas and New Year's holiday.

Also, please keep my book events in mind where I'm talking beer, selling/signing books, and in some cases tasting beer with anyone who shows up. The events thus far have been successful and I'm looking forward to keeping it going. This coming week, I'll be in Elkins Park, Pa. and Philadelphia, Pa. Here's a link to the full list of future and past events where you can catch me selling Beer Lover's Mid-Atlantic. Just these and then one more opportunity to find me out and about with my book before year-end 2015.

As you review beer events, don't forget PhillyTapFinder.com. As always, they host an impressive listing of beer event draft lists to help better inform your beer event planning.

They'll be serving a firkin of my custom-made Peg Leg Imperial Stout! Stop by for a taste and, of course, my book.

Weekly Beer Calendar Update: December 3 - December 9

And just like that, we're right in the midst of it. Thanksgiving is past and the calendar reads December. And everyone wants to celebrate with a great beer in hand. Here are more than forty ways in which you can do just that over the next seven days.

Also, please keep my book events in mind where I'm talking beer, selling/signing books, and in some cases tasting beer with anyone who shows up. The events thus far have been successful and I'm looking forward to keeping it going.

Here's a link to the full list of future and past events where you can catch me selling Beer Lover's Mid-Atlantic. Plenty of opportunities to find me in PA, NJ, DE, and MD before Christmas. Tomorrow and Saturday I'll be in Dover, Del. and the northern NJ beach region.

As you review beer events, don't forget PhillyTapFinder.com. As always, they host an impressive listing of beer event draft lists to help better inform your beer event planning.

Beer Calendar: What To Do in December 2015

Is it that most wonderful time of the year? Regardless of your take on the holidays, the beer events calendar always looks swell at this time of year. A little of everything from great gift-giving opportunities, to free tastings, to hearty beer pairing dinners.

Sales of my new book Beer Lover's Mid-Atlantic continue to hum along quite nicely. I have a full list of 11, maybe soon to be 13 events, between Thanksgiving and Christmas in all four states covered in the book. It's now that perfect gift-giving time of year, so don't forget your beer reading needs on the gift lists! Watch for me to pop up at Heavy Seas in Baltimore in December where they'll have custom-brewed beer per my recipe specs pouring during my book signing event.

For now, head on over to the publisher's website where you can find a series of links to online sites, such as Amazon, where you can find the book for sale. Brick-and-mortar stores, too, are carrying the book so look for it at your local Barnes & Noble, for example.

As always, if I'm missing any that you feel should be on here, let me know.
